Indian Companies are planning to hire at a robust pace in the next three months. A survey says public administration, education and services sectors are expected to see strong recruitment trends.

Globally, India is the most optimistic in terms of recruitment intentions for the fourth quarter, after China and Taiwan, according to staffing services firm Manpower's Employment Outlook Survey released on Tuesday.

"The job market remains robust in India as a result of strong domestic growth and recovery from key global markets. But employers in other countries are reporting strong hiring forecasts as well," Manpower India's managing director Sanjay Pandit told PTI.

India's net employment outlook -- an indicator of employers' hiring intentions -- stood at 38 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis for the next three months. For the third quarter, the outlook stood a little higher at 41 per cent.

The outlook fell slightly for the next three months as recruitment activities are relatively less in this period, mainly on account of festival season, Pandit noted.

For the fourth quarter, China has the highest outlook of 47 per cent and is followed by Taiwan (40 per cent). Interestingly, for the 2010 third quarter, India was the most optimistic when it came to hiring intentions.

Of the total of 36 countries surveyed by Manpower, 28 showed positive hiring trends for the next three months. As many as 5,395 employers in India participated in the survey.

In terms of sectors in India, public administration and education has the highest net employment outlook of 45 per cent, followed by services (40 per cent) and finance, insurance and real estate (34 per cent).

According to the report, transportation and utilities, and wholesale and retail trade sectors, each have an outlook of 22 per cent. "Once you combine strong domestic hiring along with improved international opportunities, we see one of the best scenarios that Indian job-seekers could have imagined," he said.

With an employment outlook of 41 per cent, employers in the South have strong hiring plans for the fourth quarter of this year. Northern region has an outlook of 37 per cent, followed by East (36 per cent) and West (32 per cent).

Going by the survey, the weakest hiring plans for the upcoming quarter were reported from Greece, Italy, Czech Republic, Spain and Ireland.

IIM Indore brings banking to poor students

With nearly 60% of the country’s population unbanked and the government pledging to bring banking to the lowest stratum of society, the Indian Institute of Management, Indore (IIMI), has decided to do its bit on financial inclusion. For its annual management summit Ahvan, the institute has decided to unveil a programme called Samanvay, where IIMI students will help underprivileged people in and around the campus open bank accounts and get insurance cover.

“There’s a clear need for financial services as about 90% of the population here is unbanked,” said Ravi Chandran, director, IIMI. “The project will commence from September with the unveiling of the annual summit.” The institute has involved its faculty to oversee the project. It believes that such initiatives will make students socially sensitive.

IIMI is in talks with Bank of Baroda, State Bank of India, Union Bank of India and Canara Bank for opening accounts. “The accounts will have zero or a minimum balance requirement for those who don’t have access to banking,” said Amitava Bandyopadhyay, the programme’s convener and a second-year student at IIMI.

Given the work profile and lifestyle of the people, the institute has also decided to help them get insured, like personal accident policy for construction workers and health insurance for housewives. “National Insurance Company has shown interest, and it has insurance products that suit our target group,” says Amitava.

Seven hundred students from both the batches will contribute at least `100 towards the insurance premium and logistical expenditure of about `10,000. “We will pay the premium for the first year only. The idea is to create awareness and let people experience the benefits of risk management,” said Biswadip Paul, a second year student. The students will organise a series of workshops on risk management with the beneficiaries to make the programme sustainable.

It was found that lack of information and documentation (like address proof), and not poverty, was the main reason for not having a bank account. So, the IIMI students are trying to organise employment certificates or domicile documents from the sarpanch to be used in lieu of address proof.

Each student contributor will be mapped one-to-one with the beneficiary. “It will give a sense of ownership in the initiative and encourage participants to take up more such causes in future,” said Amitava.

Through Samanvay, the institute hopes to reach out to about 150-200 people who work inside the campus as daily-wage laborers or security guards. But the main aim is to take the project outside the IIMI campus to nearby villages. “We are going to nearby villages like Janpavkuti, Bharpuwa, Bhagpura and Ambara with an approximate total population of 2,500,” adds Biswadip.

President Obama speaks about Education Reform at the National Urban League

The President Obama stated that USA education system is ranked 12th in the world. It is no secret that other countries surpass our children’s knowledge and ability to compete for jobs on a global stage. We must do better. The only question is how.

We live in a time where school budgets are leaner than ever and school systems have furloughed teachers as a cost saving measure. There is little money for professional development or new curriculum. Teachers are digging deep to pay for things out of pocket when they are not getting salary raises to reflect years of experience and pay to reflect the increased cost of living.

Cleary changes are necessary and President Obama’s recognized all of these factors when he talked about Race to the Top. The ambitious plan is designed to change education in this country. It's completely different from No Child Left Behind but just as controversial.

The President announced that part of the initiative includes a nationwide competition by states for federal dollars. The new plan ties teacher evaluation to student performance, adopting common student achievement standards, and charter schools as an alternative to public schools. Currently only 2 states have received federal educational reform money based on this new plan.

The Value of an MBA

As a career choice an MBA is a highly debatable degree , specially with the number of colleges sprouting up across the world. The choice of where and when to do an MBA is a highly subjective one. The purpose of this post is not to give an exact figure of where and when to do ab MBA but sort of t give you a guideline as to the choices you may need to consider.

Where – there are quite a few criteria which sprout up when you consider these choices. There are established educational Institutes providing High Quality MBA’s and there are a few colleges which would not necessarily come into your mind unless you have done thorough research but which match if not exceed the Quality of these established players.

When making a choice of an MBA its its very important to look within and try to find out the reasons for doing an MBA and then letting this reason be the guiding factor for you. Here are some o the reasons that I have come across

1) For better job prospects: this is a questionable driving force for joining an MBA , its always better to have a more well thought approach to an MBA . An MBA is an investment in yourself and if chosen well any MBA would add this value to you . But if this is your prime reason for joining an MBA you need to reconsider to make a better choice of school.

2) Have a Business Idea need tools to make it into a reality – Well if you are the creative sorts and have business ideas , no matter how far-fetched they seem it would be a good Idea to join an MBA programme which has specialization in Entrepreneurship. There are many schools who offer this . Do remember that sometimes this process can be disillusional and can bring you to more concrete reality. So an idea might be rejected but from the MBA you would learn to build more grounded business plans and to be a better critique of the business plan.

3) Haven’t got a clue but am sure an MBA will help - Its a better idea to choose schools which offer a more holistic approach to the MBA , an MBA can be used as a navigational tool , to chart out a career path for yourself as you move ahead in the MBA. Here its more about a trial an error methods and I would advise aspirants driven by this motivation to focus on the MBA experience and make a choice within the programme.

3) Well I think I have tried my hand in strategy and I want to learn more about it / Want to join a consultancy - For people who have given deep thought to their past experiences its a good idea to Join an MBA which is strong in strategy eg Harvard , Strathclyde etc. The process of the MBA would equip you with tools to identify the need for , create , implement and to test out Strategies.

4) I want to specialize the answer for such people is simple choose a school renowned for your specialization ad go for it full hearted.

Other things to consider - Duration of course 1 yr – 2 yrs, Return of Income, Class size , ability to network

An MBA is a learning experience its not so much about the actual learning its more about how you apply this in life. Its not an educational course its a course in changing your life , I would re comment it to all , but its important to know or to identify the take backs that you need from the course well in advance.

Central Scheme to provide Interest Subsidy for the period of moratorium on educational loans taken by students from economically weaker sections from schedule banks under the educational loan scheme of the Indian Banks Association.

The Central Scheme to provide interest Subsidy (CSIS) for the period of moratorium on educational loans taken by students from economically weaker sections from schedule banks under the educational loan scheme of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) was circulated by this Ministry to all scheduled member banks of the IBA vide this Ministry’s letter of even number dated 25.05.2010, a copy of which is also available on this Ministry’s website at www.education.nic.in. The Scheme is based solely on income criteria and not social background. Modalities of implementation of the Scheme of Interest Subsidy are inbuilt in the Scheme as circulated by this Ministry vide its letter of even number dated 25.05.2010.

A copy of the presentation made by Canara Bank is enclosed. For further details and related issues regarding procedure for implementation of the interest loan subsidy scheme and reimbursement of claims under the Scheme as well as monitoring of the Scheme, you are requested to kindly contact Shri G.M Narsareddy , General Manager or Shri M.A Nayagam, Asstt General Manager. As regards the issue of the list of recognised/approved courses/institutions to Banks it is clarified that a fresh list is not necessary since the banks are already sanctioning education loans through the IBA education loan Scheme. Banks may follow the list maintained by them under the IBA Loan Scheme and in case of doubt the Association of Indian Universities or MHRD could be approached.

The Scheme covers interest subsidy in respect of student loans to professional and technical courses which would enable the student to repay the loan advanced by banks after the moratorium either through self-employment or private/public/government employment. The scheme is effective from the academic year 2009-10 and that loans disbursed in 2009-10 would be covered under the scheme The scheme is an on-going scheme and the banks should claim reimbursement of the interest subsidy component for the period during which the scheme is operation from the Canara Bank, which is the nodal bank for this Ministry. However, interest subsidy should be claimed under the scheme only if subsidy was not being claimed by Banks against any other State Government Scheme in case, some State Governments were simultaneously offering a similar scheme of interest subsidy.

All banks are also requested to monitor the benefits accruing to different categories of loanees under this Scheme. For better statistical reference and collation of data, information pertaining to beneficiaries in respect of the categories to which they belong, namely, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Minorities, Other Backward Classes, and Others: alongwith sub-classification in terms of gender, differently-abled/ persons with disabilities as well as the disciplines/programmes of study, year of enrolment and programmes as also the specialisation of study, institutions, locations, State-wise and Bank-wise, may be maintained.

A Press Release issued by this Ministry is enclosed for information. When an eligible student approaches the bank to seek the benefit of the Scheme of Interest Subsidy, a voluntary disclosure could be obtained from the student/parent with regard to the above statistical requirements (as far as possible) and the same could then be furnished to Canara Bank at the time of availing the claims. All banks are requested to kindly furnish claim statements in the prescribed format ( as designed by Canara Bank) to the Canara Bank which in turn would submit the consolidated claims of the Banks to the Ministry.

Executive Post-Graduate Programme is a uniquely designed programme for the working executives and entrepreneurs. The objective of the programme is to provide an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills continually.

Curriculum and Pedagogy
The first four terms have compulsory courses. During these four terms, the participants are offered foundation courses such as behavioural sciences, economics, information technology, and quantitative techniques in the context of their relevance to the study of management subjects. Executive Post Graduate Programme

The program is targetted at those who want an opportunity to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management without interrupting their career. The curriculum is similar to that of the BM programme and it is recognised by AICTE and is equivalent to an MBA.

Religare, Milestone create Rs 600cr fund

Enamored by the growth in the education and healthcare sectors, Religare Venture Capital has joined hands with private equity player Milestone Capital for managing a Rs 600 crore fund that would invest in the two sectors, which remain shielded from the global turmoil. Named India Build-Out Fund I, Religare has contributed Rs 60 crore to the corpus with some banks, insurance companies and high networth individuals already committing about Rs 110 crore. "The remaining Rs 430 crore is to be raised in the domestic market,'' said Milestone's MD Ved Prakash Arya. The fund has started working on six to seven deals and the average size of the deal will be between Rs 20-60 crore. The fund has a greenshoe option of Rs 200 crore and the life of the fund will be five years. Religare and Milestone equally own the education and healthcare fund.

According to Religare CEO & MD Sunil Godhwani, the association is to leverage each group's strengths. While Religare brings in its domain expertise on healthcare, Milestone has experience in the private equity space. The two- year old Milestone, floated by Arya, the former CEO of Pantaloons and Globus retail chains, manages 6 funds that invests in real estate and warehousing among other areas.

In recent years, the education and healthcare sector has seen several private equity deals. For example: Career Launcher, Educomp, NIIT, Veta, Eurokids and Mahesh Tutorials in the education arena. In the healthcare segment companies like Thyrocare, Dr Lal Path Labs, Apollo, Fortis, SRL and VLCC got funds from private equity players.

Both sectors are supply constraint in terms of infrastructure, good quality staff and services, according to Rajesh Singhal, managing partner of Milestone Religare Investment Advisors, and are price inelastic. As per the presentations made by the company, the Indian education sector is a large market worth about $80 billion in annual spends, of which the government accounts for $30 billion (3.7% of GDP) and private sector brings in $50 billion. This $50 billion is expected to increase to $80 billion in 2012.

The Indian healthcare segment is a $57 billion market. At 5.6% of GDP, India's healthcare spend is one of the lowest globally compared to other economies like China and Brazil. The private sector accounts for $34 billion and is expected to increase to $59 billion by 2012.
